Thursday’s (May 13) $3,300 pacing feature at Cal-Expo finds Cycle
Power attempting to get back on the right track after making a break
while looming large as the 3-5 favorite with this group last week.
The Cambest offspring, who is owned and trained by Nathalie Tremblay
and will once again be handled by Steve Wiseman, was making a big
move last time turning for home when he jumped off-stride and lost
all chance. He was a powerful winner in his previous two
starts and will be looking to turn the tables on the likes of last
week second and third-place finishers Stanza and Coal Younger.
The three Spring Sire Stakes events for the sophomore trotters and
pacers are now in the books, so it’s time to get ready for next
week’s $25,000 Championships, which will all be decided on Saturday,
May 22.
Among the males, Frank’s Best has been the standout with victories
in six of the seven stakes clashes to this point, with a clean sweep
of the three this season for owner/trainer/breeder Bob Johnson and
pilot Jim Lackey.
The male pacing group had pretty much been the property of the Rick
Plano barn with Dancing Barry and Hi Ho Steverino dominating the
scene, but last week saw Art Deco posting the stakes upset for Team
Desomer. Not only was he taking his first trophy, but was also
earning his initial victory in his 14th trip to the post.
Looking at the distaffers, Upncoming Prospect and Acapulco Gold have
established themselves as leaders of their respective divisions with
victories in the last two big-money gatherings.
Upncoming Prospect did the track-and-attack to perfection and drew
off late in the pacing contest, while Acapulco Gold carved out all
the fractions and ended up on the right end of a nose photo with
Exquisite Gem in the trotting end. The latter captured the
first stakes dance of the season on April 9, and has now been
runner-up in the last pair.
